The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced today that four companies located in the Toronto area have paid $84,000 in administrative monetary penalties as part of settlements over violations of the telemarketing rules. The companies, which sell home improvement services, also agreed to put a stop to their current telemarketing practices.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today announced that it will host a meeting with telecommunications and broadcasting distribution companies to discuss the practice of charging additional fees to customers who wish to receive paper bills. The CRTC also released the results of its fact-finding exercise on these practices.

Today, following a round table with the Ukrainian community of the Etobicoke area in Toronto, James Bezan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, and Ted Opitz, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke Centre, on behalf of Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, announced a contribution to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The project aims to increase the protection of human rights of Ukrainian citizens in the courts by training Ukrainian legal professionals on the norms of the European Court of Human Rights. The project seeks to develop a training methodology and 10 courses on the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights for the National School of Judges of Ukraine and for Ukrainian universities.

Local municipalities to receive first installment of Gas Tax Funds

Chilliwack- On behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities, and Intergovernmental Affairs, Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl announced that the first installment of the federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) for 2014 is being made available to support local infrastructure priorities.

Federal dollars available to improve accessibility

Chilliwack- On behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development), MP Mark Strahl is encouraging local organizations to apply for funding under the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) to improve accessibility in community facilities for Canadians with disabilities.

"Through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, our Government is helping remove the barriers that prevent Canadians with disabilities from participating fully in their communities and workplaces," said Strahl.

Third phase of Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnership Program opens

Chilliwack- On behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Mark Strahl MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon is encouraging local groups to make application for funding under the third phase of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program (RFCPP).
